The Toyota Vellfire is the luxury Voxy. Same fundamental architecture — 7-seat minivan body, 2.5L hybrid drivetrain, sliding doors — but executed at a substantially higher trim level. Captain’s chairs in row 2 with proper recline, premium leather throughout, power-folding row 3, JBL audio, and JDM-spec interior materials that genuinely match the Lexus LM at half the cost.
This review covers the 30-series Vellfire (2015–2023) post-2018 facelift, and specifically the 2022 Vellfire Hybrid ZR / Executive Lounge — the most-imported variant for Sri Lanka in 2026.

How it drives
The Vellfire is meaningfully different from a Voxy:
- Refinement is in a different class. Cabin noise at highway speed is comparable to a Camry; bumps are absorbed without the body-on-frame jitter you can sometimes feel in a Voxy.
- Acceleration is real. The 2.5L hybrid produces enough torque to move the 2-tonne body without strain — overtaking on the E01 expressway is unstressed.
- Steering and chassis are tuned for comfort. You won’t enjoy a Vellfire on twisty hill-country roads (it leans, it floats over cambers), but for highway and Greater Colombo use it’s genuinely composed.
- Visibility and parking are excellent, despite the size. The 360° camera (standard from Executive grade) plus the tall driving position make it easy to manoeuvre.
Real-world economy
Sri Lankan Vellfire owners report 15–19 km/L in mixed driving. The 2.5L hybrid is meaningfully more efficient than the equivalent petrol-only Vellfire (10–12 km/L) but materially less efficient than the smaller Voxy 2.0L hybrid (22+ km/L) — physics catches up with the larger displacement and higher curb weight.

The luxury tax line — LKR 3.81M on this example — is larger than an entire Aqua’s CIF. This is the structural reason a Vellfire costs what it does in Sri Lanka.
The luxury tax cliff matters more here than anywhere else
Every additional JPY 1M on the auction CIF translates to LKR 2.15M of CIF (LKR), of which:
- LKR 215k goes to CID (20%)
- LKR 107k to surcharge
- LKR 2.15M to luxury tax (because we’re already above the threshold, every additional LKR 1 of CIF triggers LKR 1 of luxury tax)
- ~LKR 480k to VAT (18% on the new excise + luxury + everything)
So every additional JPY 1M auction adds approximately LKR 3.5M to the landed price. This is why specific grade selection matters far more on a Vellfire than on an Aqua: the marginal cost of stepping up from a ZR-grade to Executive Lounge can be LKR 4–6M of landed price, even though the Japan auction-side difference is only JPY 1.0–1.5M.
What grade should you actually buy
For most Sri Lankan Vellfire buyers, the practical sweet spot is the 2022 Hybrid ZR:

- Skips the most-expensive Executive Lounge premium
Lands at LKR 35–40M, vs Executive Lounge at LKR 45–55M. The Executive Lounge upgrades (rear-seat entertainment, refrigerated cool box, premium leather grade) are real but rarely worth the LKR 10M premium for typical SL family use.
Auction-sheet notes for the Vellfire
- Target grade: 4.5 or higher. At this price point, accept nothing below grade 4.
- Watch for: sliding-door track wear (heavy power-door use); rear bumper stress cracks (loading row 3 with luggage); leather wear on the captain’s-chair side bolsters.
- Common Vellfire issues: front strut bush wear at 80k+ km, rear-window regulator failures (electric power tailgate), occasional brake-actuator software updates needed.
- Hybrid battery: same THS II architecture. Generally robust; the 2.5L hybrid system is well-proven.
Vellfire vs Alphard
The Toyota Alphard is the higher-trim Vellfire — same platform, more aggressive styling, slightly upmarket interior. The 4th-generation Alphard (2023+) and 30-series Alphard pre-2023 are both common imports. Pricing typically runs LKR 5–10M higher than equivalent Vellfire grade. For most buyers the Vellfire is the better value; the Alphard is for buyers who specifically want the Alphard front-end design or top-shelf Executive Lounge.
Verdict
9/10 for the LKR 35M+ buyer who needs a real 7-seater. The Vellfire is the most accomplished mass-market luxury minivan you can buy used — there’s no Lexus / Mercedes / BMW competitor at this price point in Sri Lanka. The luxury tax cliff is the only structural problem and it’s unavoidable; budget for it transparently before committing.
