The Toyota Voxy is the volume Japanese family 7-seater. For Sri Lankan extended families — parents + grandparents + children + occasional cousin — it’s structurally the right answer: three rows of full-size seats, sliding doors that work in Colombo car parks, and a 2.0L hybrid drivetrain that returns 22+ km/L despite the 1,700kg curb weight.
This review covers the 3rd-generation Voxy Hybrid (R80, 2014–2021), the most-imported version for Sri Lanka in 2026. The 4th-gen Voxy (R90, 2022+) is reviewed separately.

How it drives
A Voxy is what it looks like — a tall, boxy, family-mover minivan. With those constraints understood:
- City driving is genuinely good. The hybrid drivetrain handles stop-start traffic smoothly, the visibility is excellent (high seating position, low waistline), and parking is easier than the Voxy’s footprint suggests because of the sliding doors.
- Highway cruising at 90–100 km/h is comfortable but the Voxy doesn’t enjoy higher speeds. Wind noise picks up; body roll is noticeable in fast cornering.
- Hill country is where the 2.0L hybrid earns its keep. With 7 passengers and luggage up the Hatton or Bandarawela climbs, the additional displacement and electric-motor torque make a real difference versus a 1.5L hybrid.
- Manoeuvrability is the Voxy’s standout strength for Colombo. Sliding rear doors don’t need clearance — you can park directly next to a wall on one side and still load passengers without trouble. Aqua / Vezel doors need 60–80cm of clearance per side.
Real-world economy
Sri Lankan Voxy Hybrid owners report 20–25 km/L in mixed driving — exceptional for a 7-seater. Compare to:
- Voxy 2.0L petrol (non-hybrid): 11–13 km/L
- Vellfire 2.5L hybrid: 16–19 km/L
- Hiace 2.7L petrol: 9–11 km/L
The Voxy Hybrid is genuinely more economical than alternatives in its class, by a meaningful margin.

Hold on — that doesn’t match the LKR 26–32M observed market range. Why?
The X-grade Voxy at JPY 2.2M is the entry point. Mid-grade 2020 Voxy Hybrid V or ZS variants land at JPY 2.8–3.5M auction CIF, pushing landed price to LKR 22–28M. The 2024 Voxy S-Z (newest gen) lands at LKR 30–35M. The market range reflects mid-grade-and-newer examples, which is what most buyers actually shop.
For a 2020 X-grade entry-spec Voxy in good condition, LKR 16–18M landed is realistic and represents excellent value.
The luxury tax cliff — why grade matters here
The luxury tax kicks in at CIF LKR 5.5M for hybrids. A typical 2020 V-grade Voxy at JPY 2.5M lands a CIF of approximately LKR 5.7M — JUST above the threshold, triggering LKR 200k of luxury tax.
If you’re shopping a Voxy near the threshold, ask your importer to model both sides of the cliff: a slightly older / lower-grade example just below threshold can save LKR 300–500k versus a similar example just above it.

Auction-sheet notes for the Voxy
- Target grade: 4 or 4.5. Voxy fleet examples (used as airport-shuttle taxis or kids-school transport) are common; verify mileage and inspect body for parking-related dents.
- Watch for: sliding-door track damage. The sliding doors are the Voxy’s best feature but also a wear point — track misalignment shows up as door-not-flush-when-closed. Inspector code
Bnear the rear-quarter on the auction-sheet car-map is the warning sign. - Common Voxy issues: rear suspension bushings on high-mileage (>120k km) examples; A/C compressor on heavy-use Tokyo examples. Both fixable but worth pricing into your buying decision.

Voxy vs Noah vs Step Wagon
The Voxy and the Toyota Noah are mechanical twins — same platform, same drivetrain, same chassis code. Differences are cosmetic (front fascia, badging, trim choices). Buy whichever lands cheaper at the spec you want. The Honda Step Wagon is the closest direct competitor, with Honda’s e:HEV drivetrain in newer generations; lands at similar money but slightly tighter rear-row space.
Voxy vs Vellfire — when to upgrade
The luxury 7-seater band starts with the Vellfire, which uses a similar 2.5L hybrid drivetrain in a more upmarket body. A 2020 Vellfire Hybrid Executive lands LKR 38–48M — roughly LKR 15M more than a comparable Voxy.
What you get for the LKR 15M premium:
- Captain’s chairs in row 2 (vs bench in Voxy)
- Premium interior materials throughout
- Power-folding row 3 in higher trims
- Slightly higher driving position (more SUV-like)
- More luxurious badge presence
For most Sri Lankan family buyers, the LKR 15M difference doesn’t justify the upgrade. The Voxy is the structurally rational choice; the Vellfire is the prestige choice.
Verdict
9/10 for Sri Lankan family 7-seater needs. The Voxy Hybrid does the job better than anything else at the price point — sliding doors handle Colombo geometry, three rows of real seats handle the extended-family use case, and the 2.0L hybrid drivetrain makes it more economical than alternatives by a meaningful margin.
