What is Hambantota Port?
Sri Lanka's deep-water port on the southern coast, used as an alternative to Colombo Port for vehicle imports. Hambantota frequently offers shorter customs queues and is closer for delivery to southern destinations like Galle, Matara and Tangalle.
Also known as: Port of Hambantota, MRMP, Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port
What is Hambantota Port?
The Port of Hambantota (officially the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port) is Sri Lanka’s deep-water port on the southern coast, ~250 km southeast of Colombo. Originally designed as a transhipment hub, Hambantota has become an increasingly common point of entry for vehicle imports from Japan.
When Hambantota beats Colombo
For Sri Lankan buyers, Hambantota Port can be faster end-to-end when:
- Delivery point is south of Galle — the inland haul saves 2–3 hours
- Colombo Port has long customs queues — overflow handling can shift to Hambantota
- Vessel routing favors Hambantota — some Japan→Sri Lanka RoRo carriers call here first
When Colombo wins
For most buyers (Greater Colombo, Western Province, Central Province), Colombo Port remains faster overall because:
- Most leasing partners, DMT offices, and customs agents are concentrated in Colombo
- Inland-haul logistics are simpler from Colombo Port to Western Province addresses
How Car Dreams handles port choice
We route every import via the port that gives the fastest total timeline (vessel arrival + clearance + inland haul) for the buyer’s delivery city. For Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Embilipitiya buyers, that’s frequently Hambantota; for everyone else, Colombo. The port choice is invisible to the buyer — landed price is the same.

RoRo shipping
