Also known as: Port of Colombo, CMB port
What is Colombo Port?
The Port of Colombo is Sri Lanka’s primary international port and the main entry point for vehicles imported from Japan. Located on the western coast adjacent to the central business district, Colombo Port handles the bulk of RoRo vehicle arrivals.
For a Sri Lankan buyer, Colombo Port handles:
- Customs clearance — the JAAI certificate, original Japanese export documents, and CIF declaration are all processed here
- Tax payment — CID, surcharge, excise, VAT and luxury tax are paid in LKR at customs clearance
- DMT registration coordination — once cleared, the car is moved to a DMT-approved holding yard for registration paperwork before delivery
Typical clearance time
For a single private-import vehicle with all paperwork in order, customs clearance at Colombo Port takes 1–2 weeks. Clearance can extend if:
- HS code classification needs review by senior customs (rare for standard cars)
- Pre-shipment inspection paperwork is incomplete
- Demurrage charges accumulate while waiting for buyer’s down-payment
Alternative: Hambantota Port
For buyers in southern Sri Lanka, Hambantota Port is a viable alternative — it’s closer to Galle and Matara delivery points and frequently has shorter customs queues. We route through whichever port gives a faster total timeline for the buyer.
The full import-to-delivery timeline (auction win → port clearance → registration → city delivery) is documented in our About page.
