What does R grade mean on a Japanese auction sheet?
R and RA are auction-house grades indicating that the vehicle has had accident-repair work — frame-straightening or replacement panels welded into structural positions. R/RA cars carry a significant resale discount in Japan and are generally not suitable for personal-use import to Sri Lanka.
Also known as: R-grade, RA-grade, accident repair grade
What does R grade mean on a Japanese auction sheet?
R (修復歴あり, “shūfukureki ari”) indicates that the vehicle has had accident-repair history — typically meaning structural welding has been performed (frame straightening, replaced panel attached to a structural pillar or rail). RA is a related grade indicating less severe accident repair, often replacement of a single panel without welding to structural members.
What R/RA actually means
It does not simply mean “has been in an accident”. Many cars with minor accident damage that was repaired without affecting structure remain at grade 4 or higher. R and RA specifically indicate structural-level repair, which typically follows:
- A front-end collision severe enough to bend the chassis rail
- Side-impact damage requiring B or C pillar replacement
- Rear-end damage requiring rear-quarter welding
- Rollover damage to the roof
Why R/RA is generally a no for Sri Lankan buyers
- Long-term reliability — structurally repaired vehicles can develop alignment, suspension and water-leak issues over years
- Resale — local Sri Lankan buyers will see the original auction sheet on resale and discount the car heavily
- Insurance — comprehensive insurance can be more expensive for accident-history vehicles
- Safety — repaired structural panels may behave differently in a subsequent collision
The exception
Some experienced importers and traders specifically buy R/RA cars at auction because of the sharp discount (often 20–40% below comparable non-R prices). For a personal-use buyer landing the car in Sri Lanka, the discount usually doesn’t justify the long-tail risk.

Vehicle grade
The overall condition rating assigned by Japanese auction-house inspectors on a 0–S scale. Grade 4 or higher is the standard target for a Sri Lankan personal-use import; grade R or RA indicates accident-repair history; grade 0 indicates major undisclosed damage.
-
Auction sheet
A one-page inspection report produced by an independent auction-house inspector when a used car enters a Japanese auction. It records overall grade, interior and exterior letter grades, accident-repair history, odometer verification and panel-level defects.
