Quick picks

If you’re upgrading from public transport, a tuk-tuk, or a hand-me-down family car, your first real Japanese import is one of the bigger purchases of your professional life. The 60% LTV cap (effective July 2025) means a LKR 12M landed price requires LKR 4.8M cash down — already a substantial commitment.

The five cars below all keep landed price under LKR 12M for typical 2018–2022 examples, while delivering on fuel economy, parts availability and resale strength.

Our top 5 first-car picks

1. Toyota Aqua

The Aqua is the obvious starting point. 1.5 L petrol hybrid, real-world 25–35 km/L, the most developed parts ecosystem of any Japanese import in Sri Lanka. A 2018–2020 Aqua lands at LKR 9–12M; a 2022 example pushes LKR 12.5–14M.

2. Toyota Vitz

The Vitz (Toyota Yaris in some markets) is the value alternative to the Aqua. Pure petrol, no hybrid premium, slightly less efficient — but typically LKR 1.5–2.5M cheaper than an Aqua of the same year. For buyers who don’t drive enough kilometres to amortise the hybrid premium, the Vitz is the right call.

3. Suzuki Wagon R

The Wagon R is Sri Lanka’s other dominant first-car choice. Kei-class (660 cc), upright body for excellent space-per-footprint, hybrid variants attract very low excise duty. Landed price for a 2020 Wagon R sits around LKR 5–7M — the cheapest credible new-driver Japanese import.

4. Honda Fit Hybrid

The Honda Fit is the same size as an Aqua but Honda’s i-DCD and later e:HEV powertrains feel slightly more lively. Boot is marginally larger; rear seats offer Honda’s “Magic Seat” flat-fold. Lands at LKR 1–2M below an equivalent Aqua.

5. Suzuki Swift

The Swift is the sportier first-car option — handling-focused, eager naturally-aspirated petrol or hybrid drivetrains, larger and more substantial than a Wagon R. 2020 Swift Hybrid lands around LKR 7–9M.
